Nikon M Plan 10x Metallurgical Microscope Objective. Thread: RMS (20.32 mm). Generic Type: Plan Achromat Metallurgical. Special Functionality: Dual Beam Interference (DI designation). This is a microscope objective intended to view solid objects using reflected light (as opposed to biological specimens on microscope slides using transmitted light). It should be used in microscopes with a 210mm tube length (rather than the more usual 160mm). This objective has been designed to support dual-beam interferometry - in one of the pictures you can see the dark disc in the centre of the lens to facilitate this.

It can also be used in standard microscopes without this facility, but you may observe a disc of slightly different brightness in the image. The lens can also be used for macrophotography. In this case, the distance from the lens flange to sensor should be 200mm. Shorter distances will give lower magnifications and may result in vignetting. Longer distances will give higher magnification but possibly reduced image quality.

The interferometry disc may also be visible depending on which distance you use. There are some marks on the black conical metalwork at the end face of the objective, but the glass itself is in good shape.
